Protect Your Floors from the Holiday Guest Invasion!

The holidays are here. At East Coast Flooring, we see lots of customers ready to make some quick remodeling decisions before the holiday season hits and the family comes over, and new flooring is a natural choice. It’s the perfect way to add an amazing new look to your home before everyone arrives. The trick, whether you’re going to have new floors installed or you want to ensure you don’t NEED new floors after the holidays, is to protect what you have. These tips can help.

Keep The Dirt Out

Much of the dirt that can damage any flooring choices can be left at the door. The trick, though, is to ensure it stays out initially. Put out a strong door mat so people can wipe their feet before they ever come in. You may also want to have guests remove their shoes when they come in the house. Make certain, though, that you have a boot tray or something similar by the door to keep the wet, muddy shoes off your floor.

Lots of Holiday Rugs!

Holiday rugs can help your home look festive this season. They can also help to reduce the wear and tear on your floor. Make certain, however, that you don’t grab the first rug you see. Avoid rubber backed choices if you have hardwood floors, as damage is almost inevitable.

Delete the Potential for Scratches

With so many people in your home, furniture is going to get moved. You’re going to be dragging heavy gifts around. You may even be decorating the tree together, which can also lead to scratches in your floor. Think about all of the potential activities, and then work from a prevention strategy. Put felt pads on furniture that might get moved. Use a Christmas tree tray if you plan to have a live tree. Considering what might happen is a great way to prevent problems.

Keep It Dry

Spills happen, particularly when you have lots of guests. Make sure everyone knows to mop spills up immediately. Keep extra paper towels on hand in various locations to tackle the job. You may even be able to prevent those spills by ensuring there’s lots of extra space for drinks to perch here and there throughout the house.

Clean It

When they leave, give your floor a little extra love. Give it the good, solid cleaning it deserves as soon as possible. You may even want to enlist the help of a professional cleaning company as a special Christmas gift to your floors.

The onslaught of guests is coming, but with a little planning, you can make sure your floors are just as ready as you are.
