Today’s savvy homeowners want to maximize every inch of their usable space, and this means heading outdoors. Not only can you enjoy the view, savor the sun, and relax while you sip your favorite cold beverage, you can take advantage of every last square foot. When creating a welcoming – and functional – space, one of the most important considerations is choosing the right outdoor tiles for patios.

Porcelain Isn’t Just for China!

When we think of porcelain, many of us think of delicate china cups or dolls. You may be in for a surprise then! This is the best tile for an outdoor patio for several reasons. Porcelain is:

  • Durable. Porcelain tiles are exceptionally hard and able to stand up to patio furniture, pets, kids, guests, grilling equipment, and your famous 4th of July get-together. But not only are they hard, they are scratch-resistant and fade-resistant. They’ll look great years down the road.
  • Water-Resistant. These tiles are kiln-fired at very high temperatures, making them just about impenetrable. They resist water – as well as mold and mildew growth.
  • Low-Maintenance. Who loves easy to clean? We know we do. Porcelain tiles do not get that whitish buildup that concrete pavers do, and they aren’t damaged by household cleaners. A simple cleaning with warm, soapy water and perhaps an occasional pressure washing will do it. Spend time enjoying your patio, not cleaning it.
  • Slip-Resistant. Matte-finished tiles are slip-resistant; you can even use them around the pool.

Porcelain is also very easy on the eyes! You can find a wide array of beautiful styles from which to choose.

Other outdoor tiles for patios that you may consider include:

  • Natural stone (e.g., granite, slate, travertine)
  • Wood
  • Ceramic
  • Plastic
  • Rubber
  • Brick
  • Concrete

While each of these has pros (and cons), we consider porcelain as the best tile for an outdoor patio. Easy to clean, maintain, install, and use on an everyday basis, this surface will invite you to spend even more time outside!
