Luxury vinyl tile can be arranged in a surprisingly wide range of patterns. These vinyl patterns can be orderly and regular, or very complex. Keep in mind what else is going on with the room.

A room with a lot of decorations will benefit from a floor that’s uses relatively predictable patterns. This doesn’t distract the eye or risk making the room look over-busy. A room that’s kept purposefully spartan can have a floor that truly absorbs the eye, adding a texture and depth that it would otherwise lack.

Grid

Grid vinyl patterns are the most basic, but this doesn’t mean they’re boring. Each row and column is aligned. This is good for a room where you want the eye drawn to features, such as one with a number of other decorations.

Offset

This is like grid, but with each row offset from the next. In other words, every other row is lined up. This is still an orderly pattern, but one that’s a little more creative than grid.

Stagger

Staggering your tile allows you to feature multiple colors in lines that “jog” across the floor. This approach to luxury vinyl tile can be an attractive and compelling feature to any room.

Corridor

This is just like a grid pattern, with every column interrupted by intervening rows. Every stack of tile that’s horizontal will get a vertical border before the next. This is a very orderly way of featuring luxury vinyl tile.

Diagonal

It can be hard to pull off in a way that’s aesthetically complete, but in the right room a diagonal pattern can make it feel larger and more spacious. This is ideal for luxury vinyl tile of the same color.

Herringbone

If you want to go diagonal with multiple colors, choose herringbone. It’s called this because of its resemblance to how fish sales are arranged. Herringbone vinyl patterns evoke a complex and sophisticated style.

Flemish Bond

Each row alternates rectangular and square tile. This can be done in many of the styles above, but it looks particularly good in offset (so that every other row is similar). By using a darker tone in the smaller squares, you can create a surprisingly deep visual texture.

Soldier

This generally refers to using vertical stacks instead of horizontal ones. The most interesting technique is to create a square with two horizontal rectangles, and then a square right next to it of two vertical rectangles. This offers a unique visual texture that captures the eye.

Assorted or Random

Planned out well, you can arrange planks of various lengths and colors in a seemingly random pattern. It can be planned out ahead in repeating vinyl patterns, or you can lay it out by feel as you go. It takes some bravery, but your floor will look unique.
